LACSON, OPPOSITION BETS GET EXPLOSIVE WELCOME IN LAGUNA

SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna Opposition senatorial bets received a warm and even explosive welcome in Laguna province Sunday, a day after holding their proclamation rally in Manila.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson, one of the bets who got the loudest welcomes, said the reception he received is proof that Laguna is opposition country.

Definitely the opposition is ahead here. This is opposition country, Lacson said at one of the senatorial bets whistle stops.

In San Pablo City, Lacson received an explosive welcome from supporters at a firecracker store, who lit firecrackers as his vehicle passed through.

At the San Pablo City Shopping Mall, Lacson exhorted Laguna residents not to forget their fight against graft, corruption and cheating.

Pakiusap koy panatiliin natin ang paglaban sa kurakot, katiwalian at pandaraya. Panatilihin nating opposition ang Laguna (My request is for you to keep up the fight against graft, corruption and cheating. Let us keep Laguna an opposition country), he said.

He said voters must not forget cases of graft like the Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard and Jose Pidal, where a call from Malacañang promptly stopped Senate probes into those issues.

At one stop during the campaign, Lacson took time to explain to a local farmer why they do not get subsidy for fertilizer and other farm inputs, noting that in 2004, more than P728 million in government money went to then administration bet Gloria Arroyos campaign coffers.

On the other hand, he said other sectors such as the Church have started to get wise to cheating and have set up their own poll watchdog mechanisms.

If people watch their votes, he said, 2007 will be a banner year for the opposition because the people are increasingly getting disillusioned with the Arroyo government.

This is going to be a banner year for the opposition, he said.
