Angara urges grads to pursue S&T excellence

Reelectionist Sen. Edgardo Angara has urged graduates to pursue further studies in science and technology to fill the increasing need for technological innovation.

In a speech before graduates of the Bohol University, Angara said that excellence in math, science and engineering is the crying need of the Philippines to be competitive globally.

Various experts are saying that Asia will become the center of innovation in the world, mainly because of the advances made in India and China. The Philippines is still a laggard a technology but not for long if our students will focus on math, science and technology, he said.

Angara is principal author of a joint resolution calling for the establishment of a Joint Commission on Math, Science and Technology (COMSTE). He filed the resolution, which later became a law upon its adoption by both Houses, after noting that the Philippines was ranked 55th among 60 countries in the 2005 World Competitiveness Yearbook.

COMSTE will study and make recommendations on how to improve innovation in the country. Angara said that nothing should be spared to perk up the competitiveness of the Philippines.

To grow as a country, we must prioritize spending and improve capacity for innovation, Angara stressed.

Angara, former president of the University of the Philippines, is one of the most sought-after speakers in commencement exercises. He has been invited to speak in 15 graduation rites. He accepted these invitations although they would keep him out of the campaign trail for some time, because education is right in his alley.

Angara has authored numerous education reform laws, including the Free High School, the creation of the Commission on Higher Education, the Technical School Development Authority, the Science and Technology Scholarship Act, and the Government Assistance to Teachers and Students in Private Education, among others.
