KIKO ON MALACAÑANG'S REACTION
TO THE WORLD BANK REPORT ON POVERTY

"World Bank's World Development Indicators 2007, which states that about 15 million or 19 percent of Filipinos in 2000 survived on less than $1 a day, should be taken constructively rather than vehemently by the Palace. We cannot paint a rosy picture for the international community if the condition of our people shows otherwise. We don't need figures to tell us that most Filipinos are living in dire poverty, cannot eat decent meals regularly and rest in the security of their own house.

We should all take poverty reports as a constant reminder and a performance indicator, so that public officials are motivated to serve better. We need to find solutions and offer results. We need to think out of the box to find creative ways of addressing poverty."
