VILLAR: STRICTLY ENFORCE GUN BAN

Senate President Manny Villar, President of the Nacionalista Party, asked the Philippine National Police (PNP) to heighten its alertness by strictly enforcing the gun ban to thwart incidents of violence related to the approaching elections. At the same time, he urged the PNP to beef up its forces in critical areas to protect the electoral process as a vital element of democracy.

Villar made the statement in relation to the incident in Jaen, Nueva Ecija which claimed at least four lives.

The series of violent incident linked to the approaching elections should intensify the effort of the PNP to curve crime by strictly enforcing the gun ban, Villar said.

The reelectionist senator who is running as an independent candidate of the Genuine Opposition also emphasize the need to modernize the PNP, along with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), to make them better equipped in carrying out their mandate to protect civilians.

The modernization of the PNP along with the AFP should be pursued and strengthened to significantly improve their capability in carrying out their duty of protecting Filipino civilians, Villar said.

Villar remains optimistic, however, that with the funds earmarked for PNP operations, the police should be able to fulfill their duties as expected, especially at this crucial time when election day is fast approaching.

Villar pushed his senatorial campaign in South Cotabato yesterday, unhampered by threats of terrorism in Mindanao.
