Villar lauds Pacquiao victory over Barrera

Senate President Manny Villar today joined Filipinos here and around the world in celebrating boxer Manny Pacquiao's historic win over Mexican boxer Marco Antonio Barrera.

"We are truly grateful to Pacquiao for once again giving glory to the country and making every Filipino proud of his nationality. He represents Filipinos who have the heart of a fighter," Villar said.

Villar who was in Geneva for the Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference said Pacquiao, after a thrilling bout in Las Vegas, Nevada, was able to rally the Filipino people behind his victory. He also commended his coaching staff that vigorously trained and prepared Pacquiao for this match.

"Pacquiao himself said that his love for our country fueled his determination and will to win. His feat succeeded in uniting a divided nation and provided our people a needed respite from politics," Villar said.

The Nacionalista Party president also noted the efficacy of Pacquiao's prowess to lure personalities from different sides of the political fence to sit side by side and watch the live broadcast of the fight between Pacquiao and Barrera.

"His win inspires us all to fight, no matter how mighty the problems besetting the country are today," he said.

"He knew our people are hurting from political bickering. Issues that preoccupied the public for the past few months are reduced now to non-entity. For giving Filipinos all around the world another reason to celebrate, Manny should be commended," he added.
