Pia condoles with Saguisag family

Senator Pia S. Cayetano today relayed her condolences to the family of the late Dulce Q. Saguisag and hoped for the full and speedy recovery of her husband, former Sen. Rene V. Saguisag and their two companions who are still recuperating after figuring in a tragic vehicular accident this morning in Makati City.

"I express my deepest sympathies to the Saguisag family. Our country just lost a true and dedicated public servant with the sudden passing of former Secretary Dulce Saguisag who ably led the Department of Social Work and Development, albeit briefly, during the Estrada Administration.

"I also join our countrymen in praying for the immediate recovery of former Sen. Rene Saguisag, one of the brightest minds to have served the Cabinet and the Senate, as well as the Saguisags' driver Phillip Calvario and their companion Rhea Ugong.

"Secretary Dulce was among the most well loved secretaries of the DSWD. She was also an avid supporter of local sports as secretary general of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines, which steered our gymnasts to an impressive performance at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games," she said.

"I trusat that the authorities will thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Aside from leveling charges on the driver of the dump truck that mowed down the Saguisag couple's van, additional warning devices for motorists could be put up at the crash site near the corner of South Superhighway and Arnaiz Avenue, said to be an accident-prone area.

"Concerned agencies like the Land Transportation Office and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority can also look into the system of scrutinizing the physical and psychological fitness of drivers of dump trucks and cargo trucks who are only allowed to ply their big vehicles along major thoroughfares at night until the wee hours of the morning, in order to prevent such accidents in the future," she concluded.
