AMNESTY FOR REBELS A CORRECT MOVE, PIMENTEL SAYS

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Nene" Q. Pimentel, Jr. (PDP-Laban) today backed Malacañang's call for early ratification by Congress of the presidential proclamation granting amnesty to rebels who have given up the armed struggle.

Pimentel also lauded the Palace's declaration of a unilateral ceasefire for the Christmas and New Year holiday.

"Good move to show sincerity of government. Maybe a corresponding show of goodwill from the rebels will ensure its success," he said of the new amnesty proclamation intended for rebel-returnees, including those from the CPP-NPA.

He reiterated his appeal to the Communist Part of the Philippines-New People's Army- National Democratic Front to return to the negotiating table.

Pimentel advised the underground communist movement to reconsider its stand objecting to a mutual ceasefire being demanded by the government while peace negotiation is in progress.

He said a cessation of hostilities on both sides will enhance the prospects for success of the peace negotiation and ensure the security of the leaders and representatives of the NDF in the talks. Not only that, he added that when the guns go silent, it is easier to hear the conversation of the negotiators.

Pimentel said the Senate committee on peace, unification and reconciliation should conduct hearings on the amnesty proclamation as early as possible so that it will reported out for floor deliberation.
