ANGARA TO DELIVER SPEECH ON NRCP 75th ANNIVERSARY

Senator Edgardo Angara will deliver a speech on "Basic Research for National Development" on the 75th anniversary of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) tomorrow, 12 March 2008 at the Manila Hotel.

Founded in 1933, the NRCP was mandated to advance multidisciplinary researches that will promote the advancement of science and technology in the country.

Today, it is the main agency facilitating basic research in the Philippines .

According to Angara , Science & Technology (S&T) advocate in the Senate, "The groundwork for knowledge-generation is basic research, its primary objective being the advancement of knowledge and theoretical understanding."

"Although risky, we must give basic research priority in our efforts at strengthening R&D," said Angara .

"Basic research contributes to the foundation of knowledge, which leads to the development of technology that, in turn, spurs innovation. This drives increased productivity and enhances the quality of life."

Angara chairs the Congressional Commission on Science, Technology and Engineering, tasked to review the state of S&T - including R&D - in the county, and create appropriate legislation to develop and promote S&T for competitiveness.
