KIKO TO NEW COMELEC APPOINTEES:
"IF YOU FAIL to PERFORM, we can all kiss our electoral democracy goodbye."

Senate Majority Leader and electoral reform advocate Kiko Pangilinan today challenged the two new COMELEC commissioners to perform their duties with highest competence as they join one of the country's most controversial institutions.

"I hope they realize that in their hands lie the urgent task of rebuilding and restoring our people's faith in the electoral democracy that has been severely tarnished by allegations of massive fraud, irregularities and controversy. It is no exaggeration to say that in this critical period in our nation's history, their failure to deliver could mean the end of constitutional democracy as we know it," Kiko said.

Former Court of Appeals Justice Lucenito N. Tagle and Judge Leonardo L. Leonida of the Malabon Regional Trial Court will fill the two vacant positions for commissioner, leaving one more vacant position in the poll body.

"If they fail to perform and restore people's confidence in our electoral system, we might as well say goodbye to our electoral democracy and find some other system that may work for us," Kiko ended.
