5 TEAMS IN EARLY VILLAR CUP MEDIA TILT LEAD

Five teams posted back-to-back victories to show the way at the start of the First Senate President Manny Villar Cup Media Edition Saturday at the AMF-Puyat Billiards Center in StarMall EDSA.

National Press Club (NPC), Bombo Radyo, Team Bulacan Organization (Team Bog), Justice B and IBC 13 stamped their class over their respective foes to emerge unscathed and upfront in the race for the coveted Villar Cup and the P50,000 top purse at stake in this event presented by Villards: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine Sports.

NPC of Pablo Hernandez (Bulgar), Benny Antiporda (Remate) and Tracy Cabrera (Police Files) blanked CAMANAVA B and BMPAP Press Corps, 5-0, to take the lead in Bracket A, while Bombo Radyo, composed of Marvin Modelo, Jobert Cobing, Gino Ordoveza, Alex Sarmiento and Jaime Dano trounced Senate B, 5-1, and SPD, 5-0, for the top spot in Bracket B.

Team Bog of Erick Silverio (People's Journal), Orlan Mauricio (RPN 9), Lucio Tabing (DZMM), Harold Raymundo (Mabuhay) and Oliver Mauricio (Metro News), on the other hand, scored a couple of 5-2 triumphs over LTFRB and IBC-NBN to share the driver's seat in Bracket C with Justice B of Errel Cabatbat (ABC 5), Benjie Pulta (Daily Tribune), Bong Javelona (ABC 5), Tuts Cabardo (ABC 5) and Bong Patino (PNA), who waylaid Justice A, 5-2, and Senate A, 5-0.

IBC 13, represented by Merwin Llanza, Leo Raloto, Ruben Montemayor, Gaylord Medinilla and Mauricio Balandoy, subdued Congress A, 5-3, and then won by default over Malacanang to lord it over Bracket D.

GMA 7 won its lone match against BMPAP, 5-0, for the second spot in Bracket A, while DZBB of Sam Nielsen, Denver Trinidad and Bernie Morales and Team Photogs composed of Joey Mendoza (Philippine Star), Nonie Reyes (BusinessMirror) and Rudy Esperas (Inquirer) prevailed against SPD (5-0) and Central Luzon (5-1), respectively to follow Bombo Radyo in Bracket B.

In Bracket C, LTFRB and IBC-NBN defeated Metro Eastern Rizal Press Corps (5-2) and Senate A (5-2), respectively, for a 1-1 slate.

ABS-CBN and ABC 5 are undefeated in Bracket D, winning by default Malacanang and Sports Beat, respectively.

A total of 26 teams are competing in this tournament organized by the Media Sports League sponsored by StarMall, 100 Plus, Pan de Pidro, Tips N Toes Nail Salon and Chopopoy's Manukan.
