Press statement of Sen. Legarda on salmonella sweep ordered

It is laudable that our government has been on its toes in barring the entry into the Philippines of potentially contaminated food products, including the reported salmonella-tainted pistachios from abroad.

Both the Bureau of Customs, which moved to stop the entry of the tainted pistachios on account of warnings issued on the shipment, and the Bureau of Food and Drugs should be commended.

BFAD's recall of a locally produced peanut butter spread on account of contamination shows that it is regularly conducting tests on food products. This should be a continuing effort on the part of BFAD.
