LOREN TURNS OVER VEGETABLE SEEDS TO MALABON

Sen. Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate Committee on Food and Agriculture, yesterday (July 24) urged local officials in provinces, municipalities and barangays to conduct food production campaigns to boost food self-sufficiency.

She made the appeal as she turned over to the City of Malabon vegetable seeds to promote a program for self-sufficiency in food.

"In these critical times when the whole world is facing an economic slowdown, and our country is also feeling its ill effects, our local officials and their constituencies should cooperate in conducting food production campaigns to alleviate hunger and poverty among our people," said Loren.

Loren also signed a memorandum of agreement between her office and the City of Malabon for food production and environmental enhancement in ceremonies held at the Malabon Amphitheater behind City Hall.

The senator also presided over the awarding of 500 vouchers from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). A medical mission performed free breast check-ups during the affair.

Loren, the UN champion for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in Asia-Pacific, also held consultations with local officials and residents on climate change issues.

The senator said that food sufficiency and climate change adaptation are necessary to improve the people's living standards and reduce risks from natural disasters.
