LOREN INTRODUCES SENATE RESOLUTION EXPRESSING 'THANKS'
TO CORY AQUINO

Senator Loren Legarda yesterday introduced a Senate resolution expressing "sincerest gratitude" to the late former President Corazon C. Aquino and "deepest condolences" to her family.

In Senate Resolution No 1252, Loren said that President Aquino "was instrumental in restoring democracy to the country and the people's faith in government through a 'people power revolution' and went on to gain worldwide admiration as a champion of peace and democracy."

Loren declared that "through the leadership and example of President Aquino, the Filipino people was able to prove their courage to the world and to themselves while other peoples oppressed by tyranny and dictatorship found inspiration in the Filipinos, under the leadership of President Aquino, and the peaceful revolution they successfully carried out."

According to Loren, Aquino also succeeded in laying the foundation for the crafting and promulgation of the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines and in laying down the foundations for the economic recovery of the country;

"As a consequence of her bravery and commitment to the Filipino people and to the rule of law, President Aquino even risked her life and the safety of her family," Loren further observed. "Even after the end of her term, President Aquino remained active in the national life of the country and of the Filipinos and has remained committed to public service."

Loren also recalled that President Cory received numerous citations and recognitions from local and international bodies including her nomination to the Nobel Peace Prize (1986), TIME's Woman of the Year (1986), the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding (1996), and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding (1998).

The resolution also stated:

"President Cory has been a constant moral force in the life of our nation, consistent in here ideals of courage, simplicity, faithfulness, and compassion; her public service record was exemplary and untainted by any wrongdoing; and she was a staunch advocate of democracy, peace, good governance, and women empowerment;

"President Aquino, was a unifying force for Filipinos of all political affiliations and sectors; an unfailing figure of prayerfulness and faith in God; and humanity owes to Maria Corazon Cojuangco Aquino the gift of people power and peaceful revolution as means for exercising their sovereign power."
