Davao says YES! to entrepreneurship

A crowd of about 4,000 students packed the University of Mindanao gym on October 8, 2009 to listen to young entrepreneurs share their stories of success and challenges. This was the Young Entrepreneurs' Summit (YES!) which the Movement for Better Values organized for the students of Davao City. Movement President Guido Delgado challenged the youth into considering entrepreneurship as an alternative career choice. "Our youth need to know that although our socio-economic environment these days frustrates most of us, they can actually be part of its transformation and help it become a stable and positive one through values-based entrepreneurship."

Guest-entrepreneurs who shared their business stories were Stax Savellano, DXN networker, Jill Savellano of Zhi Ya spa, Czarina Lim of Dimsum Diner and Jigger Avanceña of Galeas Trading Corp.

Senator Manny Villar together with Cong. Gilbert Remulla and Cong. Rimpy Bondoc graced the YES! Villar challenged the students to consider getting into business regardless of one's status in life. "You will encounter a lot of difficulties but the returns will be more! Don't be afraid to lose or fall; what's important is that you rise again and move forward."

To further fortify its vision, the Movement launched the My Business Venture Awards, an inter-school search for feasible business plans where the top three winners will be given P 10,000 as seed capital for their businesses. Moreover, it will set up P 100,000 entrepreneurship fund for each participating school from which students may tap seed capital for businesses that they wish to put up.

University of Mindanao President Willy Torres exclaimed at the YES!' success and hopes that more of such activities will be provided to the youth. The Movement for Better Values promotes values-based entrepreneurship to multi-sectoral groups, especially the youth and goes around the country bringing the YES! to schools. The YES! in Cagayan de Oro was held last August. It is finalizing its schedule for YES! in Zamboanga City and in Visayas and Luzon.

The Movement collaborated with the University of Mindanao, UP Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao University, Phil. Women's College, Rizal Memorial Colleges, and the University of Southeastern Phils. in Davao City.
