Noynoy Aquino Facebook Account Reaches 100,000 members

"We now have more than 100k supporters on Facebook. Dahil sa inyo, mas marami na akong fans kay Kris :-D Salamat," said presidential candidate Senator Benigno "Noynoy" S. Aquino III today on his Twitter Account.

This outpouring of online support reflects the substantial role the Internet will play in the 2010 presidential elections. Presidential aspirants have been using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to gather and rally supporters.

Noynoy's page, which was started last September, had garnered around 30,000 fans in just two weeks. A month after it was made an official Facebook fanpage, 60,000 more people joined the account.

According to Aquino's campaign manager Butch Abad, "This is a sign that our people's campaign is moving forward with greater vigor and momentum. Our call for honesty, decency, and responsible leadership in our government is being heard-and taken to heart-by more and more people."

"I am inviting all the Filipinos, who also long for real change, to join our people's campaign," said Abad. "I am confident that together we can bring about a true working democracy: one that provides not merely political freedom, but food, education, jobs, and equal opportunity for all."

Other presidential bets with Facebook accounts are Senator Manny Villar, who has 37,160 supporters, Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero, who has 11,879, and Defense Secretary Gilber Teodory, who has 5,339.

Aquino is currently leading in all of the major national presidential surveys. As of this writing, his page has gathered more than 100,000 supporters.
