Trillanes on Maguindanao martial law: 'GMA can't be trusted'

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV supported the call for the revocation of Proclamation 1959 in Maguindanao, citing that it is prone to be abused by the current Administration.

"The primary issue at hand is not whether the declaration of martial law is the right policy to address the situation in Maguindanao but whether Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo could be entrusted with such enormous power," he said. "Clearly, the answer is no."

Trillanes called the recent move by Malacañang "a very dangerous proposition," referring to numerous allegations of abuse and corruption to amass more wealth and power throughout Arroyo's nine-year tenure.

"It would likely be an opening that she is bound to take advantage of," he warned. "We must guard against every possible insidious plot by GMA to perpetuate herself in power beyond 2010."

Based on reports by media, the Armed Forces of the Philippines also appeared to have secured sufficient control of the affected areas prior to the declaration, according to Trillanes.
