Enrile: Erap is my President

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile today clarified that former Joseph Estrada is his candidate for the presidency in 2010 and that he was not endorsing any presidential hopefuls including administration bet Gilbert Teodoro.

Enrile issued the statement in reaction to a news report that he was "virtually endorsing Teodoro's candidacy" during a visit in Lucena City recently.

The Senate President said the report was not accurate. He said he was just expressing his humble opinion in his extemporaneous speech defining the qualities of a president.

"In my humble opinion, there are only two persons who can handle the presidency and beyond," Enrile said.

He named Estrada as one, for having the experience and a strong mind and character, and Teodoro, as the other, for having the talent and the ability.

"The problems faced by President Arroyo during her presidency which caused her to be criticized and assaulted by the media are nothing compared to the problems which the next president will have to face" he added.

He said these problems include, among others, the economy, poverty, national security, health, peace and order and foreign relations.

"Based on my experience in dealing with the present and past administrations, considering that I have been in public service for more than 40 years, the two gentlemen I mentioned are the only ones whom I believe can handle the country's problems well," Enrile said.

But he stressed that he is still a member the Estrada's Pwersa Ng Masang Pilipino and that "Erap is my President" for 2010.
