AQUINO-ROXAS TANDEM WINNERS IN NEW SWS POLL

The reputable polling firm Social Weather Stations (SWS) confirmed anew the lead of the Liberal Party tandem of Senators Benigno S. Aquino III and Mar Roxas in the race for presidency and vice-presidency in May 10.

In its survey for newspaper Business World conducted from February 24-28 among 2,100 respondents nationwide, the SWS reconfirmed previous research showing that Aquino and Roxas kept their leads over their closest rivals.

Aquino was picked by 36% of the respondents, keeping his lead over rival Manuel Villar, who was picked by 34%.

In the vice-presidential race, Roxas kept his commanding lead over his closest opponent, garnering support of 45% compared to consistent second-placer Loren Legarda's 28% rating, or an 8.5 million vote-lead if the elections were held today.

The latest SWS polls confirmed results of a similar survey done by the Pulse Asia also last month. In the Pulse Asia survey from February 21 to 25, Aquino was ahead with a percentage rating of 36% compared to Villar's 29% rating, or a 3.5 million vote-lead if all of the more than 50 million registered voters would vote.

In the same survey, Roxas lorded over Legarda with a 43% rating, a 16% lead over the latter's 27% rating, or an 8 million vote-lead.

In another survey, commissioned by the Manila Standard Today newspaper, Aquino and Roxas continued their leads, with each getting 34% and 39%, respectively, during the survey period February 20 to 26 among 2,500 respondents.

Roxas said the survey results prove the people's dissatisfaction with the incumbent government and reflect their desire for reforms and good governance, the centerpiece of the Aquino-Roxas platform.

In the latest SWS survey, former President Joseph Estrada came third with 15% and followed by administration candidate Gilberto Teodoro with 6%.

In the vice presidential race, Jejomar Binay came in third with 17%, Bayani Fernando in fourth with 3% and Edu Manzano in fifth with 2%.
