VOTERS' TRUST FOR AQUINO, ROXAS INCREASES AS POLLS NEAR

Rather than be affected black propaganda by their closest rivals, more Filipinos are giving their trust on Liberal Party (LP) standard bearers Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Senator Mar Roxas II in the homestretch of the campaign for the May 10 polls, according to a recent survey by independent pollster Pulse Asia, Inc.

Results of the survey conducted from March 21-28 among 3,000 respondents showed Aquino leading the pack of presidential candidates in terms of trust ratings by voters, with 69%, up by five points from 64% in the February survey, saying they have "big trust" on the LP presidential bet. Only 9% said they have "small / no trust" on Aquino, a significant drop of five points from 14% last February.

Meanwhile, 74% said they have "big trust" on Roxas, or a four-point increase from 70%. This makes Roxas still the most trusted public official and candidate in the upcoming elections, Pulse Asia said.

The Aquino-Roxas tandem also consistently leads surveys on voting preference for the May 10 polls as early as September last year. In comparison, their rivals in the May 10 national elections enjoyed lower trust ratings from Filipino voters,

Amid a persistent smear campaign against Aquino, only 61% of voters have "big trust" on Nacionalista Party presidential bet Senator Manny Villar, a clear indication that his camp failed to besmirch the positive campaign of Aquino, according to LP Director General Chito Gascon.

Former President Joseph Estrada placed third with 48%, followed by former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr with 36%, Senator Richard Gordon with 29%, evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva with 22% and Senator Jamby Madrigal with 21%. Environmentalist Nicanor Perlas and Olongapo Councilor JC delos Reyes each got 9%.

Among Roxas' rivals in the vice-presidential race, meanwhile, Senator Loren Legarda registered a trust rating of only 59%, way behind the rating of Roxas' 74%, or a 15-point lead.

Those who said they have "small / no trust" for Legarda doubled that of Roxas with 12%.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay got 58% trust rating, while former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Bayani Fernando had 24%, TV host / actor Edu Manzano, 23%, broadcaster Jay Sonza, 13%, and former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Perfecto Yasay, 11%. Only Dominador "Jun" Chipeco got a single digit with 9%.
