Pia, Nacionalista bets rule "Harapan" debates

Four Nacionalista Party (NP) candidates who took part in a live television debate among senatoriables on Sunday got the highest approval rating from the public in the show's online polls that ran from Sunday night until the early hours of Monday morning.

NP stalwarts Sen. Pia Cayetano, Atty. Gwen Pimetel, Susan "Toots" Ople and Ramon Mitra Jr. took the top four slots in the online audience voting of "Harapan: Mga Isyu Bayan," held at the La Consolacion College in Manila and broadcast live over television network ABS-CBN.

The online poll's final tally showed all four NP bets receiving double-digit votes, edging out six other senatoriables from rival political parties who also joined the live television debate. Cayetano got 21.86%, Pimentel 18.01%, Ople 12.86% and Mitra 11.58% when voting was officially closed at 2:30AM on Monday.

The four were followed by Rep. Teofisto Guingona III (9.86%), Rep. Ruffy Biazon (8.47%), Dr. Martin Bautista (8.15%) of the Liberal Party, Jose De Venecia III (6.32%) of the Partido ng Masang Pilipino, Rep. Rodolfo Plaza (2.47%) and Manuel Valdehuesa (0.43%) of Ang Kapatiran Party.

Cayetano and Guingona debated on the issue of poverty, Ople and Bautista on employment, Mitra and De Venecia on reforming the pork barrel system and Biazon and Plaza on law and order.

The lady senator also got the highest approval ratings from the live audience at La Consolacion college and ABS-CBN stations in Baguio, Bacolod and General Santos City through the Wireless Audience Response System (WARS).

In her first round of debate with Rep. Guingona, 86.2% of the WARS audience said they believed Cayetano's answers compared to only 39.3% for Guingona. The NP senator also got high marks in the 2nd round, with 84.7% of the audience saying they believed her. Guingona, on the other hand, had 43.2% of the audience saying they believed him while the remaining 56.8% said they did not. #
