ANGARA HARKS BACK ON PLARIDEL

Senator Edgardo J. Angara recalls the lessons of national hero and revolutionary writer Marcelo H. Del Pilar, highlighting the importance of education as a means to attain freedom.

"Ika nga, only through education and enlightenment do we truly free our people from enslavement, whether physical or intellectual," he said.

Angara gave a brief speech as the guest of honor at the unveiling of the Plaridel Statue in the Remedios Circle in Malate, Manila.

The Samahang Plaridel, working with the Manila City government and the Philippine Navy, gathered yesterday in the newly-renovated Remedios Circle to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the birth of Marcelo H. del Pilar.

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, Mr. Neal Cruz, as well as some of the descendants of Plaridel also graced the event.

Angara expressed his pride over the rich culture and history of the City of Manila.

"Tayo po ang kauna-unahang dineklara na cultural city. Malaking karangalan ito para sa atin, kaya dapat ay ginugunita natin ang pagiging Culture Capital of ASEAN," said Angara.

He also reminded us that we should never forget the legacy of our national heroes. It is also our duty to teach the next generation about our history, our culture, and our heroes.

"We must reinstill in our youth the pride in being Filipino. Kung makakalimot na ang mga kabataan ngayon, sino pa ang magmamahal sa sarili nating bayan?" he said.
