SENATOR KIKO PANGILINAN ON DECISION TO SUSPEND OMBUDSMAN IMPEACHMENT HEARING: "WE MUST GUARD AGAINST SETTING A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT

Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan today says that the Supreme Court's issuance of a status quo ante-order on the impeachment case against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez may have been arrived at prematurely and may set a precedent on how impeachment proceedings might be dealt with in the future.

"We ask our Judiciary to review this sensitive case closely and think about how their actions can possibly impinge upon the separation of powers between the three branches of government."

Pangilinan says the main thrust of the current administration is curbing corruption, and this entails all three branches of government working harmoniously with each other.

"The Legislative branch respects the Judiciary, in that Congress will comment on the decision within 10 days. In the same way that we protect the interest of the SC, especially their current budgetary woes which we are currently addressing, we ask the Judiciary to consider the working relations with other branches of government in their decision and prevent a possible Constitutional crisis."
