ZUBIRI URGES PNOY TO BUILD A NEW, MORE MODERN AND SECURED PRISON FACILITY IN AN ISLAND OUTSIDE METRO ALA ALCATRAZ

To help deter crimes and keep high profile prisoners from merely walking out of their detention cells, Senator Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri today proposed that the government should start building a new, modern and more secured maximum security compound in an island outside Metro Manila ala Alcatraz in the United States.

"This is what I have been saying all along that there are ongoing shenanigans inside our prison facilities especially in Muntinlupa where the rich and influential prisoners have access to computer equipment, cellphones, internet and even limited freedom which I am afraid allow syndicate leaders to pursue their illegal trade within the confines of the prison cells," Zubiri lamented.

He also proposed that "it is now high time to build a maximum prison security compound outside Metro Manila either at Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija or locate an island off Luzon similar to the Alcatraz."

Zubiri also suggested that the government may opt to sell or privatized the 551-hectare Muntinlupa Bilibid Prisons compound to help raise funds and a portion of it may be used to construct modern and highly secured facilities.

"A more modern and highly secured penitentiary would certainly help deter crimes," Zubiri who has filed Senate Bill 2383 or An Act Reimposing the Penalty of Death on certain heinous crimes said.
