SENTRO RIZAL OPENS IN TIME FOR RIZAL AT 150

Senator Edgardo J. Angara opened in Madrid on Independence Day the first Sentro Rizal overseas to herald the celebrations in line with the sesquicentenary of the birth of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Another branch of Sentro Rizal will be launched today in Prague, Czech Republic, birthplace of Rizal's friend Prof. Ferdinand Blumentritt, which will be led by Mrs. Gloria M. Angara. Meanwhile, the senator will open the first Sentro Rizal in the Philippines on June 28 at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Sentro Rizal, created under the National Cultural Heritage Act, will be the foremost cultural institution that will bring the greatness of Philippine language, history and heritage to the world.

"This is the global celebration of the birth of Jose Rizal, the father of peaceful and intellectual revolution in the Philippines," said Angara who authored the law together with Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara.

"At a time when Filipinos sometimes forget who their heroes are, it is good to be reminded of this incomparable Filipino - a recognized contemporary, forerunner even, of the greatest minds of his time in Asia and the world," he added.
