Creation of Laoag International Airport Authority Proposed at the Senate

Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., filed on May 15, 2012Senate Bill No. 3201, a bill that seeks for the creation of Laoag International Airport Authority (LIAA), a body clothed with the corporate personality and sufficient powers to manage Laoag International Airport, which is the only international airport in Northern Luzon.

Senator Marcos emphasized that the airport's strategic location and proximity to China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea reflect its potential to be a perfect gateway for tourists, as well as an international cargo hub, in the northern part of the country. Thus, there is a need to accelerate the upgrading of its facilities to provide a world-class standard of service, which is a key component in the promotion and growth of air traffic in the country. This can be best achieved if pursued by an office specifically tasked to do the job.

Senator Marcos cited the success of the establishment of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority which resulted in the fast track development and industrialization of Cebu as a blue print for a similar development in Ilocos region.
