Senator Koko welcomes lay group endorsement;
vows to protect life and family

Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III (PDP Laban President) today welcomed the endorsement of his candidacy by the Lay Initiatives For Election (LIFE) 2013 during its Unity for Life prayer rally at the Plaza Independencia in Cebu.

"I have always been consistent with my position that as a God-fearing nation, we need to uphold the right to life and strengthen the family as a social institution," Pimentel asserted in a statement.

The senator who voted against the RH bill said that he supported the healthy and passionate debates on the controversial bill because "that is the hallmark of democracy."

But he reiterated his opposition to the use of public money for contraception and condoms saying that there may be more rational ways of spending the people's money on other crucial health issues.

"What we should do now is be very vigilant. The bill has passed Congress and we should follow the rule of law," Pimentel added, "Let us monitor closely its implementation while exhausting all legal and democratic remedies."

Pimentel also supported the rights of religious groups to endorse candidates. "Last time I checked we are in a democracy. And a democracy allows all citizens, including lay people and religious groups, to advance their welfare using the power of the ballot."

LIFE 2013 leaders said that they will be distributing sample ballots containing the names of the endorsed candidates all over the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Negros and Panay.
