'Don't wait for child abuse to go viral, report it at once'
Statement of Sen. Pia S. Cayetano
Chairperson, Senate Committee on Women, Family Relations and Gender Equality

"I am appalled that a parent would think that giving a child a cigarette is funny or cute. This is a clear case of child abuse which I am certain that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will act upon promptly.

"This is just another case that has gone viral. Only a few days ago, there was another viral photo involving a parent who tied her child on a leash like a dog. I am glad that DSWD has taken action on this.

"It is heartening how social media has given us a chance to stop child abuse. But what about the other cases that do not go viral?

"I call on everyone to be vigilant about such cases in our respective communities. You don't need to wait for it to be posted on social media and become viral. If you see a child being subjected to any form of abuse, speak up and report it at once. Don't allow the innocent to be subjected to these degrading acts.

"Meanwhile, let's all join together in raising awareness on the dangers of smoking. We need to educate parents and the youth on tobacco hazards, taking note that May 31 is World No Tobacco Day while June is No Smoking Month

"It is not uncommon to see adults who smoke in front of or near children. Many times, they are in the same enclosed space or even caring the child. Not only are they exposing the children to second-hand smoke but they are also showcasing bad habits to the young."
