Senate civil service committee expands jurisdiction

The Senate today adopted Resolution No. 968 renaming the Senate Committee on Civil Service and Government Reorganization to the Committee on Civil Service, Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation, expanding the jurisdiction of the committee.

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, sponsor of the resolution, said renaming and expanding the jurisdiction of the committee would "officially allow the committee to acquire jurisdiction over significant matters and wide-array of issues on the important role of professionals in nation-building and development of a reservoir of professionals whose competence has been determined by honest and credible licensure examinations and whose standards of professional service and practice are internationally recognized and considered world-class."

Currently, the Professional Regulation Commission regulates and supervises 43 Professional Regulatory Boards.

"Ensuring the competency and credibility of the professionals will strengthen the trust of the Filipino people in our professionals. Renaming of the subject committee is consistent with the objective of the state to develop and nurture competent, productive, morally upright, and well-rounded professionals," Trillanes said. Trillanes has been the chairman of the Senate Committee on Civil Service and Government Reorganization since 2007. (Apple Buenaventura)
