POE RALLIES BEHIND SUCs AND SCHOLARS ON ISSUE OF BUDGET

"The budget for state colleges and universities must be increased so that facilities such as libraries, laboratories, and research centers will be improved."

Senator Grace Poe, who currently leads presidential surveys, made the statement in support of better, quality education for all.

Only 2.6 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product is being allotted to education, much lower than the prescribed 6% of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization or UNESCO.

Poe also said the government must institute funding for the scholarship of deserving students.

"We should also make sure that no school implements the "no permit, no exam" policy because poverty should never be an issue in getting an education," Poe said.

She said it is time to pass the Unifast bill, which seeks to expand student loan and scholarship programs of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and make higher education more accesible.
