Barangay Officials: Be In Forefront Of Efforts To Shield Women Against Violence--Sen Marcos

Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos today urged barangay officials to be at the forefront of the efforts to protect women against violence as he also vowed his full support for this campaign.

In his speech at the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women in Tanauan City National High School in Batangas, Marcos said barangay officials should always be ready to help in cases where women were subjected to violence.

"Barangay Chairmen, Councilors and Tanods should realize that violence against women and their children is not a mere private matter where they should not interfere or look the other way," said Marcos, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government.

Marcos cited the report of the PNP Women and Children Protection Center which said that from 4,000 cases of rape annually up to year 2000, the cases went up to 7,000 last year, where 77 percent of the victims were minors.

"Despite the passage of R.A. 9262 or "Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children" in 2004 incidence of violence against women increased from 218 cases in that year to 9,000 cases in 2011.

"There should be continuing education to reshape the erroneous mentality and culture of many Filipinos on the supposed superiority of men over women," Marcos recommended.

"Moreover, It is important to strengthen Filipino family ties and faith in God."

In addition, Marcos called for a stronger campaign against illegal drugs, noting many cases where fathers who are high on drugs harmed their families.

Marcos emphasized, "The government has the responsibility to provide adequate opportunity for a better future for all Filipino families such as better-paying jobs for parents, free education for their children, and cheaper prices of basic necessities."

"Let us admit that many of the cases of violence against women is related to poverty, to unemployment, to hunger that in some cases drives a father to direct his anger against their own wife or children," Marcos lamented.
