From wind to sun, Marcos inaugurates largest solar power field in Northern Luzon

From wind energy to solar power, Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. today inaugurated the first grid-connected solar power farm in Ilocos Norte on the first day of his campaign for the vice presidency.

Shortly after the kick-off rally with his running mate Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago and addressing students at the Mariano Marcos State University in Batac City, Ilocos Norte, Marcos was the guest of honor in the inauguration of the 20 megawatt solar power farm in Brgy. Paguludan in nearby Currimao town.

The project, carried out by the provincial government of Ilocos Norte and Soleq Philippines Inc., was constructed on a 60-hectare property. Another 20-MW plant in the same area is underway.

The power that will be generated from the project is enough to power some 26,000 households.

Marcos said with the solar farm, Ilocos Norte is on its way to become the renewable energy capital of the Philippines with its windmills and hydropower source in several coastal towns in the province.

Marcos was also responsible for the construction of windmills in Bangui and Burgos towns, which are considered the poster image of the Philippines' renewable energy program. He said with the solar farm, Ilocos Norte will generate 50 percent of its power requirement from clean energy.

Ilocos Norte also has hydro-electric power sources in the towns of Pagudpud and Adams.

"This is something that Ilocos Norte should be proud of because we continue to reduce our environmental footprint through clean energy. And we will continue to support projects like this because this is our and our future and our children's future that are at stake here," he said.

He added that solar power farm will open new opportunities for people of Currimao and the whole of Ilocos Norte because of job generation, tourism and investment opportunities.

Also present during the inauguration were project proponent Anthony Violago, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and Currimao Mayor Gladys Go-Cue.
