MY CAMPAIGN FOR UNITY ACCEPTED BY PEOPLE - MARCOS

Vice presidential candidate Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. today said his campaign to unite the country towards attaining progress is being accepted by the Filipino people.

Marcos made the statement in reaction to the latest Social Weather Survey showing him gaining the top spot with Senator Francis Escudero both with 26 percent.

He attributed his steady rise to his campaign for unity as the only way for the country to get out of its poor state of affairs. "I think my message of unity that I bring in the campaign is something that is accepted by our kababayans at tinatanggap nila na ang pagkakaisa ay kinakailangan natin ngayon," Marcos said.

He was quick to add, however, that while surveys are important, it should not be the focus of a candidate's strategy. "Hindi ko masyado tinitingnan yung survey, basta ako ipagpapatuloy ko ang aking kampanya. The survey is important but after mabasa mo na yan, ituloy mo na ang kampanya," he said.

He also nixed changing of strategy in the middle of the campaign based merely on the results of the survey. "Kung pabago bago ka ng strategy dahil sa survey, walang mangyayari sa'yo kasi para kang nagsisimula sa umpisa palagi . Hindi ganyan ang pagkampanya," he said.

The senator has made unity his campaign battle cry saying it is the only way for the country to move forward. He said he decided to start his campaign kick-off with his presidential tandem Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago in his hometown of Batac, Ilocos Norte because he would like to rally the so-called Solid North to start the unification process.

"Kaya ko sinimulan ang aking kampanya sa Batac ay dahil naipakita ng ating mga kababayang Ilokano ang pagkakaisa. Ang Solid North! Ito ang tumulong sa atin, ito ang nagpakita na maaring magkaisa kaya hindi lamang dapat Solid North kundi dapat ang pagkakaisa natin ay sa ating buong sambayanan," he had said.

Calling his campaign the Unity Caravan, Marcos spent the first week of the campaign period in the Solid North provinces of Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union and Pangasinan, where he got the support of opposing political rivals in each of the provinces.

Last Monday, San Juan Mayor Guia Gomez also endorsed Marcos' vice presidential bid. Earlier, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada also expressed support for his candidacy.

Marcos said his alliance with the Estradas goes back a long way. "Alam ninyo yung mga alliance na yan hindi nangyari ng isang araw, nag-meeting tapos ganyan na. These have been our political partners for a long time so that's why may personal, familial connections kami for decades na. Those things have been developed, hindi last week yan o last year, matagal na yan mga kaalyado na yan," he said.
