WARM BAGUIO WELCOME FOR MIRIAM, BONGBONG

Presidential candidate Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago and her running mate, Sen. Bongbong Marcos, turned up the heat in Baguio City Saturday by drawing thousands of supporters to a top university in the summer capital.

The Prince Bernhard Gymnasium of the Saint Louis University here was jam-packed with millennials wearing red shirts and chanting "Miriam, Bongbong!" when the tandem entered, waving to the crowd.

This is the second time in less than a week that the pair was seen together. Santiago and Marcos visited Iloilo City on Wednesday, and delivered a speech at the University of the Philippines Visayas.

"Nasa harap ninyo ngayon ang intelligent choice para sa pagkapangulo ng Pilipinas," Marcos said as she introduced Santiago, to cheers from the crowd. He also vowed to work with Santiago to reform the culture of corruption.

Santiago took a swipe at rivals who "pretend to be poor," claiming that she is the only presidential candidate with limited funds for the campaign. "The charge against me is poverty, and I plead guilty of that offense," she said.

The senator has spent little since for ads since the campaign period started, noting the skyrocketing prices for media placement. She was also the last presidential bet to launch her campaign, adhering to limits intended by law.

But Santiago said she prefers an independent albeit poorly funded campaign, saying that candidates who get huge contributions are also "gripped by the neck" by big business, and will be beholden to vested interest.

"Ang gusto ng mga korporasyon na ito, magpasa ng mas maraming batas na pabor sa kanila. That is the way the system works. That is why Senator Marcos and I are running for real change, not just cosmetic change," Santiago added.

The most popular presidential candidate among millennials is stepping up her campaign three weeks to Election Day. On Monday, she will deliver a speech before the graduating class of the Bulacan State University in Malolos.
