POE TO APPOINT 'TRAFFIC TERMINATOR' IF ELECTED

Independent presidential candidate Sen. Grace Poe said she would appoint a "traffic terminator" whose only duty is to solve the traffic chaos confronting Metro Manilans every day, should she win next month's elections.

"Wala syang gagawin kundi bantayan ang bawat proyekto nang matapos [agad]," Poe said during the third and final leg of the PiliPinas Debates 2016 sanctioned by the Commission on Elections.

Poe said she will make sure her administration's traffic terminator, who will hold a Cabinet rank, will be competent and should possess technical expertise in traffic management and engineering.

"Wala pang pangalan pero dapat may kakayanan, may engineering background o may talagang expertise sa traffic," Poe pointed out.

Poe said there's no easy and quick fix to traffic woes, but steps like clearing the roads of illegally parked vehicles, road widening and instilling discipline among motorists would help decongest the metropolis.

"Kailangan may disiplina. Hindi po personal parking lot ng ating mga kababayan ang mga kalsada," Poe said during the presidential debate hosted by ABS-CBN, in partnership with Manila Bulletin and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.

The senator also vowed to ensure the completion of vital infrastructure projects that would help ease traffic in Metro Manila like the South Luzon Skyway, the connecting road project linking the North Luzon Expressway and South Luzon Expressway, MRT-7 that runs from EDSA-North Avenue in Quezon City to San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan, and the LRT-1 extension from Parañaque City to Bacoor, Cavite.

As a long-term solution, Poe suggested building subway systems to reduce the volume of traffic on the road.

"Posibleng magkaroon ng subway system para mas mabilis ang byahe. Sabi nila binabaha dito pero 'yung subway sa ibang bansa sa ilalim ng karagatan dumadaan kaya pwede dito," Poe explained.

She also wanted to revive the Philippine National Railways operations from Manila to Dagupan City in Pangasinan and the construction of commuter rails in Cebu City and other urban areas.
