Press Release July 19, 2016 Statement of Senator Leila M. de Lima on the SC decision dismissing the plunder case versus former President Arroyo I have yet to get hold of a copy of, and study the Supreme Court decision dismissing the plunder case of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. I understand from media reports that the High Tribunal found that there was insufficiency of evidence presented by the prosecution at the Sandiganbayan to supposedly sustain a guilty verdict. The case dismissal is unfortunate; it was handed down as it is at a time when anti-corruption efforts in the Philippines have been receiving accolades from all over the world. While we have yet to ascertain and assess the full effect of this decision, I am one hundred percent sure that this is demoralizing or disheartening to most of us, to say the least, as it delivers a huge blow to all our initiatives. I am confident that the Ombudsman will study closely this decision, with the end in view of seeking a reconsideration. In the meantime, I remain steadfast and firm in my lifelong advocacy through my legislative work and private endeavors in support of our collective battle against corruption. |
