ANGARA FILES RESOLUTION COMMENDING 'GILAS PILIPINAS'

SENATOR Sonny Angara has filed a resolution urging the Senate to commend and congratulate the Gilas Pilipinas men's basketball team for winning the gold medal in the recently concluded 2017 SEABA (Southeast Asian Basketball Association) held in Manila.

Angara, vice chair of the Senate committee on sports, pointed out in his Senate Resolution No. 384, that the Gilas Pilipinas continues to bring pride and honor to the Filipino people and its latest gold finish marked its 8th SEABA title in a 36-game winning streak since 1996, retaining its status as king of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) basketball.

The national basketball squad clinched the gold medal when it routed Indonesia with a convincing 97-64 win on the last day of the tournament last May 18, sweeping the 2017 SEABA Championship with a 6-0 win-loss standing.

"Tayo po ay nakiisa sa milyon-milyong Pilipinong nagbubunyi sa pagkakapanalo ng ating Gilas Pilipinas. Isa na naman itong patunay na tayong mga Pilipino ay magagaling, anumang larangan ang ating pasukin," the senator said.

The SEABA victory formalized the entry of the country's national basketball team into the FIBA Asia Cup in August to be held in Lebanon and the Asia Qualifier in November, which will determine the countries that will complete in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Angara, a basketball enthusiast himself, is the current chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the national sports association for basketball in charge of drafting and implementing the country's basketball development programs at the grassroots level.

"What the Gilas Pilipinas has shown us is that we can compete and win in international competitions if we just put our collective minds to it. That's my basis why I believe there is a need for a strong partnership and cooperation between the government and various NSA's such as the SBP," stressed Angara.
