SEN. EJERCITO: SC DECISION PUTS TO REST ALL QUESTIONS ON IMPOSITION OF MARTIAL LAW IN MARAWI

I welcome the Supreme Court's decision in upholding the declaration of Martial Law through Proclamation 216. Now that the two branches of government have already affirmed President Duterte's actions and that any and all questions on its legality has been put to rest, it is time to show a united front against terrorism and lawless violence, and more importantly, begin the urgent work of rebuilding the communities in Marawi City.

I expressed support for the declaration of Martial Law since members of the Maute group are not ordinary criminals. Likewise, the intention of Martial Law declaration is very much different from what transpired before. Now, the intention is to contain the area of conflict and to put an end to the rebellion by the terrorist Maute group. No threat to basic freedom and Constitution is functioning. The real intent is to crush terrorism and rebellion, and nothing else.

Now that the 60th day is approaching, I would also like to commend our military for making significant gains in quelling the Maute rebellion. If there is a need to extend the implementation of Martial Law, we would have to call for a joint session and I would want to pursue my request for another briefing from the defense and security officials so that we will have an updated assessment of the situation.

I encourage Filipinos to level up our unity and continue supporting all efforts to end the sufferings of our brothers and sisters in Marawi City, as well as give them hope, strength and resolve to rise above the ruins of war.
