CHIZ IS UNCONVINCED ON PROPOSALS TO SHIFT TO FEDERALISM

Sen. Chiz Escudero is not buying proposals in its current shape and form seeking a shift to a federal form of government until a detailed and comprehensive plan is presented to the public.

According to Escudero, he wants to know what type of model of federalism will be used as indicated in the proposed changes to the Constitution or whether it will be patterned after the structure of existing federal governments.

Dapat mauna muna yun bago anumang panukala kaugnay ng aktuwal na pag-amyenda," the senator said.

Escudero is pushing for a comprehensive study on the proposal to amend the Constitution that will pave the way to the shift to federalism ahead of discussions on whether the Senate and the House of Representatives should convene or not to change the three-decade old Charter.

Escudero clarified that he was not against any proposal to review and revisit the 1987 Constitution, however, he maintained that lawmakers should be made aware of the wide-ranging political, social and economic implications of shifting to federalism.
