Senate lauds IBF Junior Bantamweight Champ Jerwin Ancajas

The Senate adopted today a resolution congratulating International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas for his successful title defense against Israel Gonzales of Mexico last February 4, 2018 at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Senator Manny Pacquiao, a former eight-division world boxing champion and chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, sponsored Proposed Senate Resolution No. 606

In his resolution, Pacquiao said the Senate lauded Ancajas, a native of Davao del Norte, for "bringing prestige to the country, and for becoming a consistent Filipino boxing champion."

"Jerwin Ancajas deserves to be commended for bringing pride and honor to the country," he said.

The resolution noted that Ancajas won against the Mexican contender via technical knock-out in the 10th round of their match, making it his 4th successful defense of the IBF title.

"Ancajas has come out victorious in his last 16 fights, 15 of which are by knockout," the resolution added.

According to the resolution, Ancajas, 26, has a professional boxing record of 29 wins, one loss and one draw, including 20 knockout wins.

"May his victory inspire budding, home-grown athletes to likewise excel in international sporting arenas," Pacquiao said. (Olivia Isabel Caunan)
