HONTIVEROS LEADS GROUNDBREAKING OF 200-BED HOSPITAL

Cebu - Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros on Thursday led the groundbreaking of a 200-bed hospital to be constructed in Bogo City, Cebu. The 230 million-peso medical facility will be funded by the national government, 200 million pesos of which will be allocated from the Senate and the remaining 30 million pesos allocated from the Department of Health (DOH).

"This hospital we are starting to construct today is the product of genuine partnership between and a true commitment to the health and welfare of the community by the local and national governments," Hontiveros said during her speech.

The Senator from Akbayan recalled the efforts of the Provincial Board of Cebu last year in reaching out to her office for the hospital to be constructed. "Dr. Rene Catan and Provincial Board Member Rasi Franco worked hard to pass a resolution saying that if funds were given, the local government would be able to provide equipment and staffing," Hontiveros narrated.

Hontiveros was joined by Senator Bam Aquino during the groundbreaking activity, also attended by health and local government officials. "I didn't act alone," Hontiveros said. "Senators Aquino, Legarda, Ejercito and Angara were instrumental in getting the funds needed for the construction of the hospital from the Senate," she added.

Hontiveros also thanked Governor Hilario Davide Davide III for his commitment to the project.

The medical facility, which will be able to accommodate 200 beds, will not only serve Cebu but also neighboring province Masbate. "This facility is anchored on our promise to provide ample infrastructure for healthcare towards a healthy population", explained Hontiveros. "Today, we continue building on that promise," she concluded.
