GORDON WELCOMES KUWAIT'S WILLINGNESS TO RESOLVE ROW WITH RP

Senator Richard J. Gordon welcomed a statement from the Kuwaiti government saying that the Gulf state also shares President Rodrigo Duterte's desire to maintain the deeply-rooted relations between the Philippines and Kuwait.

Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah's also assured that Kuwait is keen on maintaining safety and rights of all expatriates including the Filipino community, within the labor laws of the country, adding that he appreciated the contributions of the Filipino community who were working in different sectors.

Gordon pointed out that a culture of respect should be promoted in order to resolve the dispute arising from the incident and reiterated his earlier statement that the Philippines and Kuwait have a long history of good relations that both benefit from.

"I welcome Deputy Minister Al-Jarallah's statement. We had good relations with Kuwait even during the Iraq war; in fact we fully supported Kuwait when it was invaded by Iraq under Saddam Hussein. We really should start talking about the mutual benefits we both gain. We help their economy just as they help our economy too. We both want this agreement," he said.

For his part, the Kuwaiti official also acknowledged Manila's support of Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion. He also expressed optimism that the historic friendship between the two countries "could help overcome the exceptional circumstance" and that Kuwait was looking forward to working with the Philippines to honoring mutual interest.
