STATEMENT OF SENATOR RICHARD J. GORDON ON THE CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL HEROES' DAY

Today, we honor the Filipinos who have fought for and contributed to the country's freedom and independence. We give tribute, not only to the prominent figures in our history, but also to the unknown Filipinos, past and present, who have given much to the cause of freedom, justice, and Philippine independence and nationhood.

Heroes are those who have a concept of nation and who aspire and struggle for the nation's freedom. They are also those who define and contribute to a system or life of freedom and order for a nation; they contribute to the quality of life and destiny of the nation and they think of the future, especially the future generations.

Thus, we can all become heroes if we define ourselves and endeavor to contribute, in our own small way, towards making our country a better place to live in. We should think of ourselves as Filipinos first and take a unified step towards progress and development for our country. We can all follow the examples of the heroes in our history and fight the threats that are taking our country in their grip today. They may not be as tangible as the colonial invaders that threatened our independence, but nevertheless, they are as invasive and real.
