Senate endorses creation of Cordillera State Institute of Technology

The Senate on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, passed on third and final reading House Bill 7264, which integrates training centers and supervised state-run technical-vocational institutions of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), including the Baguio School of Arts and Trade in the Cordillera Autonomous Region.

The measure, under Committee Report 454 sponsored by Sen. Francis Escudero, creates the Cordillera State Institution of Technical Education (CSITE), which would strengthen the country's technical-vocational education in the region for the development of world-class Filipino workforce.

Under the measure, the TESDA Regional Training Center in Baguio would be the main campus of the Institute, while the TESDA Provincial Training Centers in Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mt. Province, and the local government-run Provincial Training Centers in Apayao shall be converted into extension campuses of the CSSI.

The CSITE will be under the supervision of TESDA.

Escudero, chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture, said integrated facility would equip the students with practical technical skills of global competence and caliber responsive to the needs of both the domestic and global job markets.

The Senate also approved 12 bills that seek to establish, convert, separate and rename one elementary school, 8 secondary schools and three tertiary schools nationwide.

The Senate approved the establishment and conversion of several national high schools in Nueva Vizcaya, Zamboanga del Sur, Bataan, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Masbate.

Also approved were House measures renaming and separating several high schools and elementary schools in the country.

Approved for establishment were Pinayag High School in Nueva Vizcaya and Bataan High School for the Arts.

The Senate also passed the renaming and conversion of Inoyonan High School in Camarines Sur; Tawantawan Elementary School in Davao City; Bayog National High School in Zamboanga del Sur; Lupon School of Fisheries in Davao Oriental; Kabasalan Institute of Technology in Zamboanga Sibugay; and Dr. Emilio B. Mendoza Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology in Masbate.

The Senate also passed House measures separating Sicsican National High School - Annex in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; Bocboc National High School - Kiara Annex in Bukidnon; Dabubu High School Annex in Isabela; and, Cabangahan National High School - Cordova National High School Extension in Cebu.
