MESSAGE ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

I am one with our fellow advocates for the welfare and rights of indigenous peoples here and abroad in celebrating the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (IPs).

Through this annual occasion, we have been given the opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of IPs to our country's culture and heritage and strengthen our solidarity with them as our brothers and sisters. But for the longest time, they have been subjected to harassment, intimidation and acts of violence brought by aggressive development and militarization, including the destructive exploitation and dispossession of their ancestral lands.

It is also alarming that the people who are willing to come forward to defend them are themselves being subjected to attacks, violence and harassment.
