Privilege Speech on the discrimination against transgender
August 14, 2019

"SHE JUST WANTED TO PEE"

Gretchen Diez, 28 years old, came from work one August 13, 2019. For lunch, she went to KFC at Farmers Plaza Cubao. She wanted to go home and finally rest. It was a hectic day. But she still needed to do one more thing. She needed to pee.

In a span of almost 12 hours, she found herself detained at Station 7, handcuffed and brought to Camp Karingal, brought to another police station, and then finally at Barangay Socorro, Quezon City. 1am na siya nakauwi.

Her crime?

She's a transwoman who needed to pee. Panoorin natin itong video na ito.

Mr. President, my dear colleagues, here is Gretchen, a bright young girl. She called the police when she was not allowed to use the female bathroom at Farmers Plaza. She knew there was a Quezon City Pride Ordinance which prohibits discrimination in the access to services, goods and facilities on the basis of her sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

Siya 'yung tumawag ng pulis. Siya 'yung magrereklamo. But instead she found herself in handcuffs. Siya 'yung pinosasan. Sinaktan. Nilait-lait.

A trans-woman is a woman.

What this underscores, Mr. President, is that there is grave and urgent need for a SOGIE Equality Bill. It is time that we say we will stand by those who speak their truths.

"Sorry, at ika'y nakaposas."

I am calling my colleagues in this plenary at sa Kongreso, ipasa na natin ang SOGIE Equality Bill.
