SEN. KOKO PIMENTEL: SUPPORT FAMILIES OF SLAIN JUSTICES AND JUDGES

PDP Laban Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III has filed Senate Bill (S.B.) No. 1177 granting "support for the surviving heirs of slain justices and judges" last Monday, November 18.

Senator Pimentel explained that S.B. No. 1177 is in response to the growing list of justices and judges who are threatened and intimidated in the performance of their judicial functions. He emphasized that in providing grants and benefits, it will compensate for the risk that come alongside the job of their judicial functions.

"Several justices and judges are threatened and intimidated. In one case, a member of the court was threatened by delivering a funeral wreath at the gate of his house. In addition, a former Chief Justice was in the news because of death threats," Pimentel said.

Pimentel noted that the attack against justices and judges undermines the justice system.

"The intention of the bill is really to encourage our justices and judges to dispense justice without fear or apprehension," Pimentel stressed.

Recently, Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta asked the Congress to pass a law that would give marshal security to judges following the recent killings of judges.

Pimentel, who obtained his law degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law and topped the Bar in 1990, appealed to his colleagues in the Senate to support the passage of his bill for the benefit of the surviving heirs of slain justices and judges.
