De Lima accepts LP nomination as 2022 Senate bet

Opposition Senator Leila M. de Lima accepted the nomination of the Liberal Party (LP) who recently named her among its five initial Senate bets for the 2022 national elections.

"I humbly accept the nomination of the Liberal Party as one of its candidates for Senator in the 2022 elections. I will not let prison and persecution stand in the way of the fight against Duterte's evil regime," she said in a statement posted on Twitter.

In its National Executive Council (NECO) meeting held last Sept. 28, LP formally nominated De Lima, along with former Sen. Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV and fellow re-electionist Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan.

The Liberal Party also adopted a separate resolution endorsing the reelection bid of its ally Senator Risa Hontiveros of Akbayan and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno.

The lady Senator from Bicol maintained that she, along with her fellow candidates from LP, will unite to represent the voice of the real opposition.

"Together with Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, former Sen. Bam Aquino, Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Atty. Chel Diokno, and the leadership of VP Leni [Robredo], we will make sure the voice of the real opposition is heard in 2022," she said.

Last July 21, De Lima confirmed that she would seek reelection in the 2022 national elections in an indictment letter addressed to Mr. Duterte, where she stressed that the political persecution she has been subjected to by the Duterte administration only strengthened her resolve to fight for her advocacies.

"Marami ang nagtatanong sa akin kung sa kabila ng pagyurak na ginawa sa akin ni Duterte ay may lakas pa ako ng loob na muling tumakbo bilang Senador sa 2022. Tatakbo akong muli. Hindi ako susuko. Tuloy ang laban. Sisingilin ka namin sa anim na taon na pambabalasubas mo sa aming bansa," De Lima said.
