REVIEWING MINING POLICIES: Senator Chiz Escudero, chairman of the Senate Environment and Natural resources Committee, conducts an inquiry on reports of alleged abusive practices in the grant and use of various mining permits under the Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Escudero stressed the need for the mining industry to comply with the country’s environmental and labor laws amidst news of recent mining disasters, particularly the landslide that occurred at the Semirara Panian open-pit coal mine in Antique that killed nine workers.
