Diversity of cultural expressions: Sen. Imee Marcos, chairperson of the Committee on Foreign Relations, asks colleagues to hasten the ratification of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions which, she said, has been waiting for 19 years. Marcos said the adoption of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expressions on October 20, 2005 was an important milestone in the international cultural policy. According to the senator, who is an advocate for the creative industries, the Convention is the sole legally-binding instrument that affirms the sovereign right of the States to formulate and implement policies and measures to support the creation, production, distribution and access to cultural activities, goods and services. “Through this Convention, the global community has formally recognized that cultural expressions produced by artists and cultural workers have both cultural and economic aspects,” she said in sponsoring Senate Resolution No. 933. Marcos, during Monday’s plenary session February 26, 2024, also sponsored SRN 936 entitled, “Resolution Concurring in the Ratification of the Host Country Agreement Between the Republic of the Philippines and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Establishing the GGGI Office in the Philippines.
