Sen. Leila M. de Lima's Statement on DENR's Order to Stop Operations of Cebu Dolomite Firms

If only it was not for real, it would have been a hilarious joke.

After patronizing the two dolomite mining and processing firms operating in Alcoy, Cebu, DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu now orders their closure. After acquiring dolomite from the Alcoy firms and dumping it on Manila Bay, Cimatu now sees it fit to investigate the harmful effects of the dolomite spillage on the corals near the companies' foreshore loading facilities.

Nakakatawa naman talaga ang DENR. Pagkatapos nilang isabog at ikalat ang dolomite sa dalampasigan ng Manila Bay, saka pa lang nila ngayon ipapa-imbestiga kung sanhi nga ba ng pagkamatay ng mga bahura ang natatapong dolomite ng dalawang minahan sa Alcoy, Cebu.

Sec. Cimatu should not only be ordering the stoppage of the two dolomite mining and processing firms, he should also start directing the clean-up of the dolomite from Manila Bay that his agency previously dumped there for so-called "Boracay feels". Parang napakalaking katangahan naman na iniutos nila ang pagtambak ng dolomite sa Manila Bay bago pa man nila masiguro kung ito nga ba ay hindi nakakasira ng bahura.

The rehabilitation of Manila Bay includes the revival and regeneration of its coral and mangrove systems. If dolomite is harmful to coral life, then how can DENR still expect to revive corals in Manila Bay after dumping several tons of the material on it? Ngayon pa lang nila iimbestigahan kung nakakasama ang dolomite sa kalikasan pagkatapos nila itong itambak sa Manila Bay?

Anong klaseng utak meron ang mga opisyales na ito? Sobrang nakakagalit at nakaka-high blood sa katangahan at kawalan ng pag-iisip. The incompetence, negligence, and utter lack of intelligence is simply appalling.

Only in this administration has Imeldific beautification projects once again trumped informed decision-making of supposedly professional organizations like the DENR. Nakakapanghinayang ang mga taon na ginugol ng mga nakaraang administrasyon para sa pagpapadalubhasa sa mga kawani ng DENR kung gagawin lamang silang "window-dressers" o taga-palamuti. Baka naman sa susunod ay pwedeng DENR na rin ang magsabit ng mga banderitas sa pyesta ng mga LGU.

Sa pagtambak ng dolomite sa Manila Bay sa kabila ng imbestigasyon sa Alcoy, Cebu kung ito ay nakakasira ng bahura at nakakasama sa kalikasan, para na ring sinabi ng DENR na wala silang kwentang ahensya. ###
